PRINCIPLE

Chloride ions in the sample quantitatively displaces thiocyanate from mercuric thiocyanate. Liberated thiocyanate ion reacts with ferric ion forming a red ferric-thiocyanate complex proportional to the concentration of chloride present in the sample.
